In August 2011, three members of St. Herman Orthodox Church, the "St. Herman Orthodox Church Men’s Trio", recorded a CD entitled "Let My Prayer Arise" for the edification of their parishoners. The Story of this CD

Postcard from Joel

During the Dormition fast of 2011, our good friend Joel, a regular member of the St. Herman Orthodox Church choir, was briefly back home in Littleton, Colorado on break from teaching English in Kurdistan, Iraq. During this time, he and two other parishoners, Andrew Finzel and Peter Farley, sang several songs together as a trio during the services which are held during this fast. As this was the first time this particular trio had been assembled, after church on Sunday (August 7th) several members of our parish responded very positively and asked if the trio would be willing to record "The Eyes of All Look to Thee With Hope" (Track 3), which they had just sung, for them. The three agreed to do this starting the next night. After recording this one song, the three enjoyed it so much that they decided to record four additional songs that night, and at least six more the following night. Once they had completed these recordings, Joel began to run out of time for the summer, so the group decided to leave the CD unfinished and postpone additional recording until he returned from Iraq the following year. Tragically, but according to the perfect and holy will of our loving God, Joel died peacefully in his sleep in Kurdistan just 8 weeks later. Andrew and Peter decided to release this CD as a memorial to Joel, preserving his beautiful voice. We hope this CD blesses you as Joel blessed us all during his earthly sojourn. Glory to Jesus Christ!

May his memory be eternal!

"We must by every means implant in the field of our heart the seeds of the virtues: faith, hope in God, love for God and our neighbor. We must fertilize it by prayer, patience and good works; and not for a single hour must we be completely idle and inactive, for in times of idleness and inactivity the enemy zealously sows his tares. While men slept, his enemy came, and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way." (Joel’s emphasis added)
— St. John of Kronstadt (The last quote Joel posted on his Facebook website, September 17, 2011)
